These virtual date ideas for long-distance are ways to express your love for each other creatively.

You don’t have to be a professional writer or artist to attempt some of these ideas, just have an open mind.

1. Writing prompts

One of my favorite fun things to do in a long-distance relationship. Select a writing prompt and then give each other 15-20 minutes to write a short essay based on the prompt.

You may read it and share your feedback. I like the prompts from The Isolation Journals by Suleika Jaouad as they’re reflective and soul-enriching.

2. Write a poem

Another one of my favorite fun things to do in a long-distance relationship is to write each other poems.

You can find a prompt or select a word to spark inspiration. Then give yourself 15-20 minutes to craft your poem.

You don’t have to be a professional writer or poet to try these writing activities. They’re meant to exercise your creative writing muscle so don’t be afraid of the pen and have fun!

3. Draw a doodle

Have several prompts and draw a doodle based on the prompt. Give yourselves a timer as well and then show each other your doodle by the end of the time.

The prompts can range from a random object to a cartoon character. Again, this exercise aims to get creative and have fun.

4. Paint your portrait

Grab several paints and a brush and paint a portrait of each other. This is another one of those cute ideas for long-distance relationships!

It’s an intimate experience as you have to occasionally stare at each other and the results are usually hilarious especially when you both aren’t professional artists.

You can pop open a bottle and ask each other questions while painting. If you don’t have any paints, you can draw instead.

5. Show and tell

Select a word, type it in your photo album, choose your favorite photo, and then show and explain to each other your choice.

These photos will remind you of fond memories and are a great way to get to know each other on a deeper level as you see the world through their lens.

Here are some words or prompts for you to try:

  1. Favorite photo of your partner
  2. Family
  3. Sky
  4. Christmas
  5. Tree
  6. Beach
  7. Wedding
  8. Food
  9. Holiday
  10. Random

6. Create a crossword puzzle for each other

This “fun things to do in a long-distance relationship” idea requires a bit of creative thinking.

Following the format of the crossword, why not make each other one based on clues about each other?

This is a great way to test how well you both know each other. They can have as many or as few clues as you’d like.

7. Host a virtual pub quiz

If the crossword idea is too difficult, then why not opt for the pub quiz format? Just like a pub quiz, you can have five categories.

The questions don’t have to be centered around your relationship, you can take turns hosting a general knowledge quiz instead.

You can even invite your friends to join the online pub quiz if you want a more hyped-up atmosphere.

8. Send each other a scrapbook to fill in

Some of these fun things to do in a long-distance relationship require more time and patience but it’s a great one to look back on.

You can buy an empty scrapbook and fill it in with photos of each other, cute notes, and doodles.

Let your creativity run wild and send it to your partner for them to fill it in. You can send it back and forth to each other every month or every other month.

This way you’ll have posts that you’re looking forward to receiving rather than your bills.

9. Create a playlist together

Select a genre or theme and then choose your songs based on it. It’s a great way to get to know each other’s musical preferences and learn a different side of your partner.

You can explain to each other your song selection and discuss which songs you like or dislike.

10. Design your dream house

Another fun things to do in a long-distance relationship is to design your dream house. You can take inspiration from Pinterest and discuss how you’d like your dream house to look like.

This is also a great way to learn each other’s interior style and aesthetics. It doesn’t have to be a dream house either. It can be your dream holiday villa or countryside manor.

Let your imagination run wild with this one but see if any of these ideas can be incorporated in your future living space.

11. Go on an online scavenger hunt

Go on Amazon, set a budget of 10 USD and a timer of 15 minutes, and see how many items you can add to your basket with that amount. Share your list by the end of the 15-minute mark.

A random but fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship. You can mail them to each other as a bonus!

12. Virtual museum date

It’s great that we live in a world where we have access to arts and culture at our fingertips. Fortunately, there are plenty of museums that you can explore virtually.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, select a virtual museum, a collection, or a period, and then list three things that you learned from your visit.

13. Tour an art gallery

If museums don’t tickle your fancy, you can try touring an art gallery virtually.

One of my favorite fun things to do in a long-distance relationship is an activity my boyfriend suggested to keep our art gallery date more exciting.

Pick a room in the gallery, both of you select a painting you like and then guess which painting your partner chose.

14. Send each other handwritten letters

A romantic gesture would be to write letters to each other. Of course, this doesn’t mean you stop communicating over text or video calls.

But there’s something more intimate and thoughtful about sending a handwritten letter. You can decide how frequently you want to correspond via letter.

15. Watch a movie together

I’d recommend downloading Teleparty, a web browser extension that synchronizes your video so you can watch the movie together seamlessly.

There’s also a group chat function that you and your partner can use as well while watching your movie.

16. Binge watch a TV show

An alternative to movies could be binge-watching a TV show instead. This is suitable if you both have a free day and want to do nothing intense.

17. Have an album listening party

A fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship if you both are music buffs. Each of you takes turns selecting an album.

It can be your favorite album or an artist whose music you want to explore. Then rate every song on the album. You can discuss after every song what you like or didn’t like about it.

18. Play charades

There are plenty of games to play in a long-distance relationship. One of them is charades. You can download apps that will give you plenty of prompts.

Alternatively, you can create your prompts based on several categories like movies, books, and actors.

19. Hangman

Another popular game to play in a long-distance relationship is hangman. An oldie but a goodie, it’s a great way to pass the time.

20. NYT Games

The NYT has a list of games for you and your partner to try together online. There’s the option of trying their free games such as Wordle, Connections, and the Mini.

21. Exercise together

There are plenty of exercise videos for you to try on YouTube. Pick one that suits both your fitness levels or select a fun dance session.

Either way, it’s one of the fun things to do in a long-distance relationship that’s also great for your health.

22. Eat the same meal together

Order from the same restaurant or order the same type of cuisine from your local and eat together online.

23. Cook a meal together

If you want to elevate your meal dates, why not try cooking a meal together? Pick a recipe you both have been meaning to try.

Video call and watch each other attempt to cook the same recipe. You can compare who made it better (aesthetically).

24. Make cocktails together

Cooking not your thing? Why not try making cocktails (or mocktails) instead? Choose a liquor of your choice and then try different varieties of cocktails.

You can also rate which cocktail you like. A fun weekend activity to do in a long-distance relationship.

25. Have a karaoke party

One of the fun things to do in a long-distance relationship is having a karaoke party. You can find videos on YouTube and take turns singing.

26. Go on a stroll together

This might be a tricky one to pull off but if you have a stable signal on your phone, you can video call and go on a walk together. You can show your partner the area as well.

Of course, pick a safe area and be vigilant when you’re video calling while walking.

There are some quizzes you can try online. Some fun ones can help you get to know each other.

Another one of the fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship is play truth or dare. It can be as risque or light as you want it to be.

Fun Things To Do Long-Distance Relationship: Learning Edition

These fun things to do in a long-distance relationship can be considered opportunities for both of you to try new things. It also encourages lifelong learning.

29. Learn a new language together

Take up the challenge of learning a new language together. You can use the popular app Duolingo. The app’s design has made learning a new language fun and almost addictive.

You can hold each other accountable and practice speaking the language with each other.

To make it even more exciting, you can plan a trip to the country that speaks the language you’re learning and test out your speaking skills.

30. Challenge each other to try a new recipe

Similar to the cooking date but this time you both choose a recipe for the other person to try. This is a great activity if you both want to level up your repertoire or try new cooking techniques.

31. Read a book or article together

If you’re an avid reader, I’m sure you have plenty of books on your TBR pile. Select a book that you think your partner would be interested in and read it together.

It can be a video call dedicated to reading several pages of the book and then discussing what you think of it so far.

Alternatively, you can swap books for articles or essays if that’s more digestible. The intention is to read something that will encourage debate and critical thinking.

32. Work on each other’s hobbies

You and your partner might not have similar interests and that’s okay and perfectly normal.

An alternative fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship is to simply stay on a video call while you both work on your hobbies.

It’s nice to simply be in each other’s virtual company as you focus on your projects or hobbies.

33. Take an online class together

Perhaps there’s a new skill that you’re both eager to learn or a topic that you’d like to know more about.

There are paid options on Coursera or some videos on YouTube depending on what you’d like to learn. Regardless, it’s a great way to introduce a new topic for both of you to discuss together.

34. Create a presentation deck

I’ve seen this idea from TikTok where friends get together and do a presentation deck of what they’ve been up to for the last several months.

I thought it’d be a great fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship. The topic is entirely up to you. Some theme suggestions include:

  • What’s your Roman Empire? (Or what topic are you currently obsessed with?)
  • Your favorite memory of us?
  • What do you do for a living? (For my couples who are dating a Chandler #iykyk)

Fun Things To Do Long-Distance Relationship: Growth and Intimacy Edition

These ideas range from emotionally intimate to getting virtually kinky. There are at least one or two ideas that will pique you and your partner’s interest.

I understand how hard it feels to be physically away from your partner. I hope that these ideas will give you the inspiration and motivation you need to persevere as a couple.

35. Create a bucket list together

If you haven’t already, create a bucket list of all the things you want to do personally and together.

This activity is a way for you to learn what your dreams are and see how you can support each other.

36. Create a vision board

Once you’ve listed your goals and dreams, make a vision board. You can do your boards or create one together via Pinterest.

Hopefully, this exercise will get you two excited about your future together.

37. Plan a holiday or experience together

Another activity to get you both excited is planning a holiday or experience together. This could range from signing up for a physical cooking class or going away on a hiking trip.

Are there any goals or dreams on your bucket list that you’d like to tick off together? The key is making a long-distance relationship is to have something to look forward to.

38. Set intentions for your next visit

Of course, not every physical meeting has to be treated like a holiday. One thing you can do is to set intentions on your next visit.

Setting intentions can be centered around what will bring you closer to your next chapter together.

For instance, if you’re both from different countries or live in different cities, the purpose of your next visit could be to work out where would be the ideal place to settle down.

Or if you’re not there yet in your relationship, the intention of your next visit could be to meet more of each other’s friends and family.

It’s entirely up to you two and what you’re both comfortable with.

39. Check in on each other’s progress of personal and joint goals

It might not seem like fun but checking in on each other’s progress towards personal and joint goals is a great way to cultivate support and unity in a relationship.

You can offer each other praise if you’ve achieved small milestones and offer support or advice on areas of improvement.

40. Discuss how you can improve as a couple

Another self-development activity for you and your partner to try. When having this discussion, it’s important to speak from a place of compassion.

This means that this isn’t a conversation for complaints but rather an opportunity to learn how you both like to be shown care and how you can improve your relationship as a couple.

Some questions you can ask:

  • On a scale of 1-10, how well do I treat you?
  • What’s a compliment I’ve given you that stands out in your mind?
  • What’s one, small gesture that makes you feel loved and appreciated?
  • What’s your favorite way I support you?
  • What’s one way you’d love to be better supported?

41. Practise gratitude

One of my favorite fun things to do in a long-distance relationship is to practice gratitude.

It’s easy for us to fall into a routine that we don’t take the time to show or say how much we appreciate our partner.

At the end of each day, say one thing you’re grateful for in general and one reason you’re grateful towards your partner.

It might seem minor but it goes a long way towards improving your emotional connection.

42. Ask personal questions

Whether you’ve known your partner for a few months or a few years, there’s no harm in asking more thoughtful questions that will help you get to know your partner on a deeper level.

I’d recommend the Intimacy Deck. Their cards are divided into six categories and each card is meant to spark more meaningful conversation.

43. Send kinky messages

It isn’t crass to be sending kinky messages to your long-distance partner. Being physically apart for so long can take a toll and sexting can help maintain sexual attraction.

44. Get intimate in the bedroom

As I said being physically apart can take a toll so get on a video call with each other and be intimate with yourself in the bedroom.

You can wear sexy lingerie and even use a sex toy. Whatever it is, it’s important to maintain a healthy sexual relationship, even when you’re apart!

Fun Things To Do Long-Distance Relationship: Thoughtful Edition

Fun things to do in a long-distance relationship can also be interpreted as doing acts of service or sending gifts. These ideas will surely put a smile on your loved one’s face.

45. Send a care package

Curating a care package with all their favorite things will surely make your partner happy. It shows that you’re paying attention to what they like and that you’re very thoughtful.

And if you don’t know, don’t worry – you can always ask them (subtly).

46. Have a spa night

Credit: bridgesward

Get a face mask, ice cream, and a scented candle. Create a calm atmosphere in your room and put on a movie that you both can watch.

This is a fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship when you both have had a stressful week and want to unwind.

47. Help with a chore or task

Has your partner been complaining about not having time to clean the house because they’ve been busy? Or do you know an errand that they’re been putting off?

Identify which chore or task you can help them tick off their list. It can be hiring a day cleaner to clean the house or calling a plumber to fix that leak.

Gestures like these will make your partner feel better and grateful towards you.

48. Order their groceries

Another suggestion would be to order their groceries online and get them delivered to their doorstep.

Again, you can do this when you know they’ve been busy and could use some help around the house.

49. Send them a random gift or card

Sometimes, people are more excited about receiving a gift or card without any occasion. It shows that you’ve been thinking of them and who doesn’t love receiving posts that aren’t their bills?

You can browse at Funky Pigeon for card and gift ideas, or check out my personal favorite, Moonpig

50. Plan a surprise visit

If time and money permit, why not travel to surprise them? Or you can arrive a week earlier than your expected date of arrival.

Of course, this would be a fun thing to do in a long-distance relationship if your partner likes surprises but either way, I’m sure they’d be delighted to see you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the secret to a long-distance relationship?

Emotional connection and support are crucial in a long-distance relationship. Staying in touch and including each other in your everyday situations and feelings is necessary to keep the feeling of intimacy consistent.

How do you know if he’s getting bored of you?

If your partner seems less interested in spending time with you, or if they don’t seem to have anything to talk about when they’re together, they may be bored. However, it could also mean that they’re preoccupied, sad, or stressed. It’s best to ask how he feels.

Should long-distance couple text everyday?

It’s a good idea to use texting for quick messages and leave longer conversations for phone calls and video calls. Excessive texting in a long-distance relationship can lead to boring conversations, frustration, and time away from your personal life.

Conclusion

Having fun isn’t something you only experience when you’re physically together, it can also be cultivated when you’re in a long-distance relationship.

I hope these ideas on fun things to do in a long-distance relationship will inspire you to create joy in the situation you’re in. All the best!
